Somewhere around six months, the puppy who came running every time decides your voice is optional. That's normal, and it's also the worst possible time to test off-leash.

A long line is the in-between step. Your dog gets to run, sniff and make choices, and you still have a way to reel them back in when they ignore you.

How to use a long line safely

• Clip it to a harness, not a collar. A dog hitting the end of a long line at a sprint can hurt their neck.
• Wear gloves or let the line drag, and never wrap it around your hand.
• Use it in open space, away from traffic, trees and other dogs.
• Check the line and clip for wear before each session.
